MANCHESTER ASHTANGA YOGA

What is Ashtanga?

What is Ashtanga?

What is Ashtanga?

Ashtanga is a dynamic structured style of yoga that synchronizes breath  with a progressive series of postures to create internal heat, build strength, increase flexibility, and focus the mind.

Taught as  a self practice, Students learn the sequence gradually, receiving new postures only when they’re ready. This ‘drip-fed’ approach allows each practitioner to build strength, stamina, flexibility, and confidence steadily and safely, progressing at a pace that suits their own body.

Over time each student builds on their practice adding more postures when they are ready.

Ashtanga is a grounding practice which when practiced mindfully will help you to regulate your nervous system.

This is the traditional method of teaching Ashtanga yoga

These classes are suitable for all levels of practitioner as they can be modified to suit you wherever you are at in your yoga  journey.

I run regular 4 week beginners courses where you will learn the practice from scratch.

This is the perfect way to learn Ashtanga and will give you a practice to use at home on your own.

What is Ashtanga?

Your Teacher

Donna is Authorised to teach both Primary and Second series Ashtanga yoga by Manju Jois.

I currently practice a mixture of primary and intermediate series and the beginning of  third.

Ashtanga is my only yoga practice and I have been practicing daily since 1998 when I studied with Rolf Naujocat in Goa.

I endeavor to teach in the way that my teachers taught me, but taking into account the student's age and ability, and modifying accordingly.

Practice with Me

Six Series

The Ashtanga method has six sequences, though many people only really practice the first series. The postures are intelligently sequenced so that they open your body gradually.

Connecting breath to movement

Each sequence builds up to a peak posture in the middle. All of the sequences begin with sun salutations and a set sequence of standing postures which are designed to create strength in the legs and open the hips as well as open the heart.

You then move into your chosen series for the day and end your practice with the finishing postures which involve back bending and inversions.

The practice is designed so that you move through the postures connecting breath to movement, so one breath, one movement. Each sequence lasts for roughly an hour and a half depending on the length of your breath and the idea is to breathe fully and deeply, with bandha in all of the postures.

Two types of class

Ashtanga yoga is commonly taught in primary series led classes where the teacher calls out the name of the postures as you move through them. It is also taught in the Mysore style self practice method where the teacher observes the room full of people practicing in their own time.

You need to have remembered your sequences in order to do this type of class but it is usually taught one posture at a time over a few months and you are generally not moved on too far until you can remember the order and names of the postures you have already been given.

This is actually the perfect ‘All levels’ Ashtanga class.

The postures are linked together with a vinyasa, a mini sun salutation, and this is designed to stretch out your body in between postures, and keep the heat and the concentration. Each posture begins and ends at Samasthitihi, or standing.

Ashtanga Yoga is a beautiful Practice

Given time, dedication, and hard work, Ashtanga makes you look inwards.

It begins on the mat. You repeat the same postures daily but your body and mental attitude is always different. Slowly you notice patterns in your behaviour towards the postures. Eventually you change your behaviour patterns off the mat too.
